VICTORY CHAPEL IS COMING TO CLAY COUNTY - JANUARY 2027 SERVICE #1

Grow in Faith

HOW DO I GETCLOSER TO GOD?

You get closer to God the same way you get close to anyone - by spending honest time together. James 4:8 makes one of the most beautiful promises in the Bible: draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. He is not standing at a distance waiting for you to qualify. He's already moved toward you; closeness begins the moment you move toward Him.

First, know this: God wants to be close to you

Closeness with God isn't something you have to convince Him of. The whole story of the Bible is God closing the distance between Himself and people.

From the garden of Eden to the cross to the promise "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee" (Hebrews 13:5), Scripture tells one long story: God pursuing people. Jesus didn't come to make God love you - He came because God already did (John 3:16).

So if you feel far from God, the distance isn't His idea. And the way back is shorter than you think.

Talk to Him - honestly and often

Prayer is how closeness grows. Not formal speeches - honest conversation. Tell God what's really going on, thank Him for what's good, and ask for what you need.

Think of any relationship you value. It didn't deepen through occasional formal meetings - it deepened through regular, honest conversation. It's the same with God. Philippians 4:6 says to bring everything to Him in prayer. Everything includes the boring, the embarrassing, and the mundane.

If prayer feels awkward, that's normal - and fixable. We put together a simple guide: How Do I Pray? - it will walk you through starting from zero.

Let Him talk to you - through the Bible

God speaks through His Word. Even a few minutes a day in the Gospels will change how clearly you hear Him.

A relationship where only one person talks isn't much of a relationship. God's side of the conversation comes primarily through Scripture. If you're new to the Bible, start with the Gospel of John - it's written, in its own words, so that you would believe and have life (John 20:31).

Don't read to check a box. Read to meet Someone. Ask a simple question as you read: "What does this show me about God?" You'll be surprised how often the page seems to read you back.

"Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you."
James 4:8

Do what He says - obedience is closeness in action

Jesus said, "If ye love me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15). Obedience isn't earning God's love - it's responding to it.

Here's a secret seasoned Christians learn: closeness with God is rarely a feeling problem. It's usually an obedience bottleneck. When we know what God is asking and we stall, the relationship feels distant - not because He moved, but because we did.

The good news: the moment you turn back toward Him, He's right there. Not keeping score. Keeping you.

Don't do it alone

Faith was never meant to be a solo project. Hebrews 10:25 tells us not to give up gathering together - because closeness with God grows fastest in community.

This is exactly why Victory Chapel exists: Know Jesus. Grow in faith. Go share it. Growth happens in the middle - and it happens with people. If you're anywhere near Clay County, we'd love to be part of your journey.
