HOW DO I PRAY?

Prayer is simply talking to God - honestly, in your own words, like you'd talk to someone who loves you. You don't need special language, a church building, or a perfect life. Jesus said when you pray, go somewhere quiet, close the door, and talk to your Father who hears in secret (Matthew 6:6). If you can be honest, you can pray.

What prayer actually is (and isn't)

Prayer is a conversation with God - not a performance, a formula, or a religious transaction. God isn't grading your vocabulary; He's listening to your heart.

A lot of people avoid prayer because they're convinced they'll do it wrong. They heard someone pray eloquently once and thought, "I can't do that." But Jesus pushed back on exactly that idea. He warned against praying to impress people and against long, repetitive speeches (Matthew 6:5-7). Then He gave His disciples a prayer so simple a child could learn it.

Prayer is less like giving a speech and more like a child crawling into a parent's lap. The words can be clumsy. The access is what matters.

How do I start praying?

Start where you are, with what's actually on your heart. Find a quiet moment, speak to God honestly - out loud or silently - and don't worry about getting the words right.

Here's a simple way to begin, following the pattern Jesus gave in the Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13):

  • Start with who God is - "Our Father." Remind yourself you're talking to Someone who loves you, not a distant judge.
  • Tell Him what's on your heart - your worries, your gratitude, your needs. Philippians 4:6 says in everything, let your requests be made known to God.
  • Ask for help and forgiveness - "give us this day," "forgive us." Daily bread and daily grace. Both are meant to be asked for daily.
  • End with trust - "Thine is the kingdom." Hand the outcome back to Him.

Do I have to pray out loud, kneel, or use certain words?

No. The Bible shows people praying kneeling, standing, walking, weeping, and even from the belly of a fish. God responds to sincerity, not posture.

Hannah prayed so silently her lips barely moved - and God answered (1 Samuel 1:13). The tax collector in Jesus' story simply said, "God be merciful to me a sinner" - and went home justified (Luke 18:13). Nine words. That's the prayer heaven honored.

If all you can say is "God, help me" - that's a real prayer. Some of the most powerful prayers in history have been short, desperate, and honest.

What if I don't feel anything when I pray?

Feelings aren't the measure of prayer - faith is. God hears you whether you feel it or not, and some of the deepest prayer seasons feel quiet at first.

Prayer is a relationship, and relationships deepen with time and consistency more than with emotional fireworks. Don't judge your prayers by how they feel. Judge them by the faithfulness of the God who promised to hear (1 John 5:14).

Keep showing up. A few honest minutes every day will do more in a year than one dramatic hour does once. And if you'd like help learning, that's exactly what church family is for - growing together, not performing alone.

"The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much."
James 5:16
