VICTORY CHAPEL IS COMING TO CLAY COUNTY - JANUARY 2027 SERVICE #1

Find Jesus

WHAT IS BAPTISM?

Baptism is a public declaration that you belong to Jesus. Going under the water pictures your old life dying with Christ; coming up pictures your new life rising with Him (Romans 6:3-4). It doesn't save you - it celebrates and announces that Jesus already did. Every believer in the New Testament did it, and Jesus Himself modeled it.

What baptism actually means

Baptism is an outward picture of an inward reality: buried with Christ, raised to new life. It's saying with your body what you believed in your heart.

Romans 6:3-4 says we're baptized into Christ's death and raised to walk in newness of life. The water is a symbol - a beautiful, unforgettable one - of the real transaction that happened when you trusted Jesus.

Think of it like a wedding ring. The ring doesn't make you married - it shows everyone you are. Baptism is Christianity's public "I do."

What baptism is not

Baptism is not what saves you. Salvation comes by grace through faith alone (Ephesians 2:8-9) - baptism is the first step of obedience after salvation.

This matters, so let's be clear: you are saved the moment you trust Jesus, not the moment you touch the water. The thief on the cross was never baptized, and Jesus promised him paradise (Luke 23:43).

But Jesus commanded baptism (Matthew 28:19), and every believer in Acts did it right away. It's not optional decoration - it's the normal, joyful first step of a new life.

Who should be baptized?

Everyone who has personally decided to follow Jesus. In the Bible, baptism always follows belief - "those who accepted his message were baptized" (Acts 2:41).

That's why we baptize believers, not infants. Baptism is your choice and your declaration - something you do because you believe, not something done for you before you could understand it.

If you were christened as a baby, that's a beautiful thing your parents did - and believer's baptism isn't a criticism of it. It's simply you making the faith your own, out loud.

"Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead... even so we also should walk in newness of life."
Romans 6:4

What about the baptism of the Holy Spirit?

Water baptism and Spirit baptism are two different things. Water baptism is something we do; the baptism of the Holy Spirit is something Jesus does - filling believers with power for life and witness (Acts 1:8).

This is its own beautiful subject, and it's close to our heart as a church. We wrote a separate short read on it - the baptism of the Holy Spirit - if you want to go deeper.
